If You Are Feeling Blue, Are You
Calm, Strong, or Sad? https://learningenglish.voanews.com/a/idioms-color-blue/5303536.html |
Advanced |
|
The color blue is
also sometimes linked to a feeling of security, say researchers who study how
colors make people feel. If you call someone true blue, you mean you can
depend on her completely. A true blue friend is loyal and trustworthy. A
friend like that is extremely valuable. You might even say that someone who
is true blue is worth her weight in gold. But that would be mixing idioms! |

Why Is 2020 Called a Leap Year? https://learningenglish.voanews.com/a/why-is-2020-called-a-leap-year-/5283720.html |
Advanced |
|
In a leap year, the
dates jump over one day of the week. Let me explain. In 2017, the last day of
the year, December 31, fell on a Sunday. In 2018, it fell on a Monday. In
2019, it fell on a Tuesday. But in 2020, December 31 will fall on a Thursday.
It just leaped right over Wednesday. The reason for a leap
day or a leap year is because our calendar does not follow the Earth’s orbit
around the sun exactly. Each year, we have a little time left over. So every
four years, we put all that time together into an extra day – or, what is
officially called an intercalary day. But I have never, ever heard an English
speaker use that term. “Leap day” is fine. |

‘Stir-Crazy’ Is Not a Way of
Cooking https://learningenglish.voanews.com/a/stir-crazy-is-not-a-way-of-cooking/5267406.html |

Some experts say the
term “stir-crazy” dates back to the early 1900s. It was used to describe
prisoners who become mentally unbalanced from being locked up. Other

expression to mean stuck in any situation where we do not want to be. If you
are stir-crazy, you feel restless, trapped and bored. |

‘Spoon-feeding’ Not Just for
Babies https://learningenglish.voanews.com/a/spoon-feeding-not-just-for-babies/5166426.html |

Babies should be fed
slowly and carefully. We don’t want them to choke or hurt themselves from
eating too quickly. You may also have to spoon-feed others who cannot feed
themselves. However, food is not the only thing we spoon-feed. We can also
spoon-feed information.Usually that information is very detailed or hard to
understand. So, we must explain it carefully. When explaining something
complex or detailed to others, you may have to spoon-feed the information. |
